Newport News Public Schools is excited to announce an enriching summer initiative designed to elevate the educational experience for our students. Introducing our summer program, ELEVATE, which aims to provide credit recovery and advancement options for high school students (rising 9th-12th) at Woodside. Middle schoolers (rising 5th-9th graders) will participate in our engaging program at Gildersleeve, while identified K-5th graders will have the opportunity to attend Camp Elevate, fostering confidence, independence, and valuable social and leadership skills. Camp Elevate will offer a range of enriching learning experiences that captivate, inspire, and challenge students, with activities spanning literature, math, and science camps, all while ensuring a fun and interactive atmosphere. To further enrich the summer experience, Enrichment STEAM Camps tailored for rising 3rd through 10th graders will take place at Hines, providing an exciting platform for exploration in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics. We are committed to ensuring accessibility, and thus, meals and transportation will be provided for all participants. In June, detailed information regarding ELEVATE site locations and bus schedules will be accessible through the Bus Stop Query. Elementary and Middle School

ELEVATE Dates: June 26-July 23 (Mon-Thu; 15 days total; Schools closed July 4)

Staff Work Days: June 24 and 25

Elementary Locations:

Tier A: DSA, Greenwood, Riverside, Stoney Run (8:15 AM-1:15 PM)

Tier B: Sedgefield, Jenkins (9:30 AM-2:30 PM)

Middle School Location: Gildersleeve (9:30 AM-2:30 PM)

Program Information

A five-week (15 day) summer learning program will be offered for selected elementary students (rising pre-K through 5th) and middle school students (rising 6th through 9th grade) Monday-Thursday June 26-July 23.

The elementary school program will be held in-person at various school locations. Parents will be notified in writing of their child's assigned school for the summer program in June.

Elementary and middle school students will be enrolled in ELEVATE based on assessment information such as reading diagnostic data and other criteria. Schools will notify families of Summer School Elevate selection with the Quarter 3 report card.

Program Information

Enrichment STEAM Camps for Rising 3rd-10th Grade Students
We're excited to offer a range of engaging and challenging activities that will inspire your student's creativity and critical thinking skills.

STEAM Center applications will be emailed to all eligible NNPS students during the 4th marking period.

High School ELEVATE Program (rising 9-12): Credit Recovery and Credit Advancement

Session I Dates: June 24-July 11, 2024 (No classes held on Fridays)

*In observance of the national holiday, students will not report to ELEVATE on July 4.

Recovery Hours: 7:30 AM-11:00 AM

Advancement hours: 7:30 AM- 2:00 PM

Program Information

High school students (rising 8th-12th grades) may take courses for credit advancement and credit recovery.  Only select courses are offered for first time credit and are listed in the credit advancement section. Outdoor Ed classes will be held at Newport News Park and other location(s) to be announced when available. Transportation will be provided. There is an additional $30 fee for Outdoor Education classes. Please contact your school counselor for more information.

Student Registration

Secondary students will have the opportunity to retake courses (credit recovery), or to take a new course (credit advancement), during the summer ELEVATE program. Families should contact their child's school counselor to approve the registration form, and to ensure that they are registering for the correct course.

The high school program consists of two sessionsSession I (en español) from June 24-July 11, only first semester courses are offered during this time; Session II (en español) from July 15- August 1, only second semester courses are offered during this time. There is a $50 fee to register for each recovery or advancement course. Refund requests are available through the second day of class. Receipt of payment is required. Refunds will not be granted for failure to attend or failure to participate.

HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT REGISTRATION PROCESS:

  • Registration is completed at your home school
  • School counselor must sign off on course selection
  • Payment submitted to bookkeeper at home school
  • Student will be enrolled by the school’s registrar once payment is collected
  • Check/money order made payable to home school

All summer classes will be taught in-person Monday – Thursday.  Attendance is mandatory. More than one absence prevents the student from earning credit for the course. Three (3) tardies constitute one absence.

Classes will only be offered if there is significant enrollment.

Personal Finance is a full-year class that extends throughout both sessions of summer school. This course cannot be broken into two parts. Participation in Personal Finance is required (June 24- August 1) for credit advancement and credit recovery.
